A secret Caribbean oasis in Bonaire

Every time you come back, you feel better.

You may have just spent a morning snorkeling at 1,000 degrees, or a day windsurfing in Lake Bay.

But the moment you hit the passcode and walk through the door at Bamboo Bonaire, you feel something.

It is not easy for a small hotel to cultivate that.

This is a boutique hotel that has been around for a little over a decade, hidden out of sight from the West Coast Road, steps from Captain Don’s and Buddy Dive.

But you will never know. Because it looks like its own dimension.

There are only 13 elegantly decorated rooms here, most of them cottage style, some with their own private patios with magnesium plunge pools or whirlpools.

And all of them are wonderfully calm, delicious and flabby. And that’s the biggest story here: the overwhelming feeling of near-impossibly calm.

With high walls, a breeze and a Bonaire sky, you’ll feel like you’re somewhere in the American desert – surrounded by cacti somewhere in New Mexico or Arizona. (This is a Bonner, of course, you already have an aloe vera plant on the other side of the wall.)

It’s a beautiful, ethereal feeling, that you are in a unique place in space and time – and that’s exactly what Bamboo is trying to achieve.

This is an oasis and a getaway, whether you’re a couple honeymooning or on a week-long water adventure (Bamboo has its own partnership with VIP Diving, which means you get unlimited tanks 24/7 – just pack up and head home to the dive site Favorite in Bonaire Marine Park).

treatment room.

There are small touches – my name is painted on a wooden sign above the doorstep, or the fact that every room has a kitchen or kitchenette and an outside shower.

Then there are the bigger touches: a lovely common area that feels like your own spa, complete with a pool, living room-style chairs, and hot tub; Fantastic boutique spa and, fortunately, one of the best restaurants in the Caribbean, CHEFS Bonaire.

Central hot tub.

It’s not easy to classify – it’s a boutique hotel, but it has all the amenities of a much larger resort; It is definitely a wellness hotel, but it easily exceeds this category. It’s not a dive hotel, but you get the same needs filled with much more luxury.

Then there is that wonderful sound again: trembling palm leaves, desert breezes, wooden bells.

This is not like any other resorts in Bonaire, and not like anywhere else in the Caribbean.

It’s the kind of place you’ll keep coming back to.
