Seth Curry on Ben Simmons: Expect a ‘difficult’ comeback

In an interview with two major Australian newspapers, the Melbourne Edge and the Sydney Morning Herald, Seth Curry spoke about his Australian teammate Ben Simmons’ performance and what to expect when Simmons returns to play in October.

While noting that Simmons is a player of “all-star caliber” the Nets will need on the field, he also said that coming off a year’s worth of surgery and back surgery, things could be tough for Simmons.

“There are always challenges. Above all, he missed an entire season. It would be hard to get his basketball back,” Curry said.

“I don’t know exactly what he’s been through, mentally – it’s hard for me to comment on – but taking this year, getting that time, out competing and playing five-to-five basketball would be like tough…just take some time and re-acclimatise. Playing high-level basketball, but he’s a special talent, and he has all the skills. You need to net on the ground.”

Simmons last played in the NBA on June 20, 2021 for 76ers. Due to mental health issues, Simmons never played for Philly, then traded on February 10, 2022. While ramping up, Simmons suffered from back pain. Something has been bothering him in the past and on May 4, he underwent surgery in Los Angeles. He’s spent the majority of his time in Brooklyn since then recovering, rehabilitating…and participated in two games at the New York Liberty Games.

Carey is embarking on an Australian promotion for Foot Locker and spoke with the two newspapers two days ago. He said he saw Simmons training and liked what he saw.

“I’ve seen him at the facility a few times,” said Carey. “Like I said, [he’s] He was doing a lot of shooting, working out, working on his body and being in the gym, so, from everything I’ve seen, I hope he’s there ready to go to training camp.”

The two were, of course, teammates in Philadelphia and sent to Brooklyn with Andre Drummond and two first-round picks James Harden and Paul Millsap on the trade deadline.

“We will need what he brings to the table. He is clearly an all-star caliber player,” Curry said. “He is clearly trying to make the most of this season, recovering physical and mental health. Like I said, he had a year off, it would be good for him to get back on the field and get acclimated again.”

Curry also said he has selfish reason to hope for a return to his former form that saw him be selected to the NBA All-Star Teams three times, the All-Defensive Team twice and the All-NBA Team once.

“He made a lot of 3-point shots for his teammates. Getting good shots obviously helps me a lot. Pick-and-roll, delivery, two-player… He’s a good guy who rolls to the edge and finishes. Defensively… he can guard Lots of sites.

Curry also spoke about his other Australian teammate, Patty Mills who re-signed with the Nets for two years and $14.2 million.

“Patty has been here in Brooklyn for the past few months – [he’s] great leader [with] Lots of energy,” Carey told both newspapers. [he’s] A veteran and I try to learn from him as much as I can. We had some good moments last season, especially when Shabab got injured at the end of the regular season.”

Carey said he is looking forward to Australia’s promotion and that with all the Australians on the Nets and staff list, he has compiled a list of things to do.

“I try to do as much as possible. We have a lot of Australians on our team with the Nets and a couple of my teammates – they gave me some good stuff to check out,” Curry said.
